Recruits. At 0900 hours I took command of Bay 01: twelve feet by sixteen, one garage door, a concrete floor of questionable loyalty and a population of spiders I have chosen to treat as local allies. By 0905 I had declared the campaign a success. By 0910 my tape measure disagreed with my floor plan by four inches, and so begins the central theme of this programme.

Here is the actual plan, which the data insisted I write down in order. First we empty the bay. Then we skim, caulk, sand and mask, spray a scrubbable finish and let it fully cure. Then a raised floor goes in with the utilities underneath, then the partitions and doors, then climate, then benches and irrigation, then lights, then sensors, and finally a commissioning run. The order is locked: the room has to hold its temperature and humidity before a single seed sees it.

Why so strict? Because the last grow in this household ended with a fungal outbreak that took out every plant in the tents. The Commander does not like to discuss it. The data does: stagnant air and surfaces you cannot wash are an invitation. So this time the walls get a washable finish, the air gets a path, and every phase gets a sensor before it gets a plant.

The budget rule is the other half of the show. Almost everything in this bay will be second-hand, haggled for, tested on the bench and logged. When a bargain fails, you will see it fail. When a twelve-dollar sensor beats a gadget that costs ten times more, you will see that too.

[OWNER: add before photos and the measured floor plan.] Next episode: Operation Clean Sweep, in which the Commander discovers how many extension cords one garage can contain.
